Influenza, commonly known as "the flu," is a contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent seasonal flu is by getting a vaccination each year.

Older people, young children, pregnant women, and those with certain health conditions (asthma, diabetes or heart disease), are at increased risk for serious complications from seasonal flu.

Every year in the United States, on average:

  • Five to twenty percent of the population gets the flu
  • More than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu-related complications
  • About 36,000 people die from flu-related causes

The number of Indiana flu-related cases is on the rise and because of this…Nightingale Home Healthcare is now offering in-home flu shots at no charge to Medicare patients and veterans across the state of Indiana who are unable to leave their residence due to age or disability. For all other homebound individuals, a small fee will apply per vaccination. However, most insurances and Medicare replacement plans are accepted, which can be verified on a case-by-case basis by calling the office.

In-home vaccinations for homebound residents will begin October 1 and can be administered anywhere across the state in the privacy of the patient's home. Nightingale is dedicated to improving the health of Hoosiers and preventing the further spread of influenza.
