Today I had coffee with another physician and we were both talking about how blessed we are to be dermatologists. We shared our common experiences, talking about what a privilege it is to help other people feel better about themselves. There have been so many new medications and treatments available during the last ten years that we now have so much more to offer our patients. Just to list a few “miracles”, our psoriasis patients can now be treated with the new biological medications, narrow-band UVB, and laser treatments in addition to the older traditional medications. Our acne patients can benefit from blue light treatments, laser treatments or lower dose Accutane (for selected people). Patients with pre-cancer (actinics) and small superficial basal cell skin cancers may now be treated at home with a prescription strength cream. People like me, who were part of the “baby oil and iodine” generation damaging their skin with too much sun, now have an amazing variety of treatment options to help reverse the damage with minimal side effects and limited “down-time.” Botox, Restylane, Fraxel, Thermage, and IPL were beyond our dreams a decade ago. We agreed that we can’t wait to see what wonders the next decade will bring!
