COSMETIC DENTISTRY
There is talk about how dentistry has progressed so that the “fear of the dentist” is a thing of the past for the Gen-X and younger generations. Dentists are patting themselves on the back for this change in attitude, but there is one problem. The largest group who visits the dentist today is the baby boomers. Boomers are experiencing some of the highest technological advances in dentistry and are reaping the benefit of beautiful smiles.

Although fear still lingers with some of these patients from past experiences, their attitude seems to be changing. Often I have patients remind me of how anxious they were when they first visited my office. “Don’t you remember when I wasn’t this calm, Dave?”, they will ask. I still deal with the occasional new patient who has overwhelming anxiety. I have tried to calm their anxiety by placing TV’s on the ceilings so they can lose themselves in a DVD or general programming during their treatment. There is also sedation dentistry, which is a process that allows patients to be so relaxed that they can sleep through their treatment, also with the CEREC technology, patients can receive crowns in one easy visit. Care and compassion go a long way in putting the patient at ease. What do you think about “sleep dentistry” and “one visit CEREC crowns” and their impact on how dentistry is perceived? Does sedation during dental treatment appeal to you? Does the prospect of having to visit your dentist only once to get high quality, all porcelain restorations, sound good to you? Do you still harbor anxiety from past dental experiences? How do you deal with it? What can make it better? This is your chance to work out your concerns with your peers and a dentist who is willing to listen.
