Taking charge of our own healthcare
|
Recently, I was browsing an aisle in the local pharmacy and I noticed a myriad of test kits that were available. There were kits to test for allergies, cholesterol, prostrate, thyroid, hepatitis C, blood pressure, urinary tract infections, and on and on. The kits led me to think about how often we are put in charge of our own healthcare. Only a few years ago, I was just learning about cholesterol—still not clear about the numbers…which one is the good cholesterol, which one is the bad. I also learned that some cooking oils contribute to higher cholesterol, and beyond that, my knowledge is slim.
But should we expect people to know all the ends and out of their health conditions? What if a positive result from a test kit throws someone into a panic and causes an anxiety attack? On the other hand, what if someone gets a false read and never sees a doctor at all?
Why has our medical system forced us to become keepers of our health? Is it a good thing or bad?
This do-it-yourself plan is okay if you are installing a faucet, but when it comes to my plumbing, I want the real thing. I want an old-fashioned doc who not only knows where my pipes are located but what to do about them when they get a clog.

Theres Ldl and Hdl.
L for "Lousy" cholesterol ( a bit less grim than "Leathal")
You don't want it to be high.
The other one's the opposite
(so no need for a gnomonic but for symmetry
you might use "Healthy" cholesterol).
You want the good stuff to be high.
