One reason that we include gardening in our health magazine is because of my belief in the therapeutic value of working with plants and the soil.
For me, this health benefit began when I was a child while helping my dad plant the annual summer garden. Though it was hard work to go along the neatly laid out rows and drop the potato eyes just right, or sprinkle beans the exact distance apart, and later help out with the weeding …the reward of seeing things pop through the earth and bring forth tasty vegetables was well worth the labor. I loved checking each day to see which vegetable would spring up first.
Today, though I have limited space to allow my green thumb to thrive, I still reap much benefit from working with my potted plants…especially the orchids. Watching and waiting for them to bloom is always a thrill, and feeling the new soil in my hands when repotting time comes is one of my favorite chores. When I am out of doors and working with the plants, I can feel the stress of the day leave me for a time.
If you haven’t worked with plants or been involved with gardening, I highly recommend it.
