Almost every day in the life of an emergency physician, a patient will arrive in the ER or an Urgent Care office with an injury or illness that they’ve tried to treat themselves. “Doc, I poured alcohol on the cut and it hurt like hell, but that’ll prevent an infection, right?” Wrong!!! Here are a few of the most common ill advised home remedies, why they don’t work, and what you should do to help yourself before seeing a doctor.
Burns and Butter
Butter has no medicinal properties what-so-ever, and may contaminate a burn causing it to become infected. Any burns should initially be treated with cold water or an ice pack to limit any ongoing thermal injury to the skin. The cold will also help in easing the pain. read in detail
